Arctic cold sets records in eastern United States ( Reuters)

Baltimore; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Morgantown, West Virginia; Zanesville, Ohio; and Flint, Michigan all set or tied record lows. Niagara Falls freezes again: more.. Photos The latest in a series of arctic weather systems to grip the winter-weary eastern United States, the cold front stretched from the Canadian border to southern Texas, where freezing rain was forecast. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe called National Guard units to help rescue motorists stranded on icy Interstate 40 in the eastern part of the state. The storm dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain on much of Arkansas late on Sunday, leaving it nearly paralyzed. The severe cold and icy roads prompted the federal government to open its Washington offices with a two-hour delay after being closed on Monday. Schools, colleges and local governments throughout the region were closed or opening late. The cold is expected gradually to lift to normal March temperatures this week, first in the U.S. midsection and then in eastern states, Oravec said. The storm was blamed for at least six deaths, most of them from traffic accidents on slippery roads.

Scientists In New Zealand Study How Deep Fish Can Survive In The Ocean

Rowden said he put on gloves and carefully picked up one this link of the fish. "It was like a water-filled condom," he said. "A sloppy, gelatinous mass that moves between your hands. It was very cool, and very strange to see its organs and everything." Rowden, who works at New Zealand's Max Workouts National Institute of Water and visit the site Atmospheric Research, said scientists had previously speculated fish couldn't live below certain depths but that catching the fish and studying them helped provide more scientific certainty. The fish are the second-deepest recorded catch. In 1970, a boat off the coast of Chile reported catching a cusk eel at a depth of 8,370 meters in a trawl net, although questions remain whether that fish was caught at the ocean floor or higher up as the net was hauled in. The paper's lead author, Paul Yancey of Whitman College in Washington state, said they were able to measure the levels in the fish of trimethylamine oxide, a molecule that protects proteins from pressure. He said there appears to be a natural limit to the amount of the molecule a fish can contain.
